Penwith: Devastation at Penzance<IMG alt="Penzance Promenade" hspace=2 src="http://www.cornwall24.co.uk/images/photoshare/img79" align=right vspace=2 border=0>Penzance has witnessed its heaviest storms in 25 years with parts of the sea defences completely destroyed. Two car parks were flooded by the high tide and the surge of water whipped up by gale force winds. Some cars had water up to their windscreens. The walkway past Newlyn Green is partially washed away and large granite boulders that form part of the sea defences had been hurled onto the promenade wrecking pedestrian barriers.Several small boats were sunk in the harbour and many others suffered damage. <IMG alt="Newlyn Green" hspace=2 src="http://www.cornwall24.co.uk/images/photoshare/img78" align=left vspace=2 border=0>Today the clean up operation begins removed tons of shingle, stone and seaweed from the roads and pathways.<IMG alt="Harbour car park flooding" hspace=2 src="http://www.cornwall24.co.uk/images/photoshare/img76" align=right vspace=2 border=0> |
