Penwith: Hayle Harbour Sold OffOne of Cornwall’s most historically significant harbours has been sold-off to a foreign company. Penwith Councillors said selling Hayle Harbour was their only hope in ensuring it receives its long overdue redevelopment. A huge Dutch company called ING placed the winning bid for the harbour and has created a subsidiary firm based in the UK to oversee its running. They plan to build 400 new homes and create over 200,000 sq. ft. of retail space during the project, which is expected to attract over £100 million investment from businesses. As far back as the Bronze Age, Hayle was an active port used by Irish and Breton merchants and the town as we know it today grew up during the 18th Century. By the mid-19th Century had staked its claim as Kernow’s most important harbour town. Hayle’s Mayor, Marjorie Roberts said, “Progress is being made and we must all pull together to make sure the redevelopment happens. “We need this more than anything for the future generation in Hayle. |
