North Cornwall: No to Dumping off Whitsand BayCampaigners are bracing themselves for a long, drawn out battle with the Government over plans to increase the amount of waste it dumps off Whitsand Bay. The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has granted a licence to the Ministry of Defence to allow the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport to dispose of 215,000 tonnes of waste material. It will be dumped off Rame Head. Campaigners have met Government officials, without success, and now plan to take their case to Europe. The waste is dredging from the seabed of Plymouth Sound to ensure that the depth is maintained for marine traffic. The dredging will have to tgake place every five to ten years and campaigners say this current disposal should be the last at Whitsand Bay. |
