Penwith: Hill fort savedPenwith District Council has been awarded Heritage Lottery Funding for the restoration of Lescudjack Hillfort in Penzance On Wednesday 23 March, Penwith District Council was notified that its application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £41,400 was successful. This will enable the council to commission an archaeological survey of the Iron Age hillfort, for the site to be sensitively landscaped for the community's enjoyment and for a programme of educational activities to be run with local schools. Penwith District Council has also received grants from Penzance Town Council and Cornwall Heritage Trust,as well as a few donations from the community and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. The council is now able to proceed with the acquisition of the site at the beginning of April. Penwith District Council is setting up a Lescudjack Hillfort Management Group, with local representatives, to assist the council with this fantastic community project. Lesley Allen, Education Officer at Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, will be co-ordinating the development of educational resources and activities. Local schools will be glad to hear that there is a small amount of Heritage Lottery Funding available to help with the cost of school transport for visiting the site. “Everyone at Penzance Infants School is delighted and looking forward to being involved with improvements at the hillfort� said Nikki Owen, Head Teacher, Penzance Infants School. |
