Carrick: Former MP David Mudd to contest Falmouth-Camborne

Former Tory MP David Mudd caused shockwaves in political circles yesterday when he announced that he would be standing again in his old Falmouth-Camborne seat in a move that could split the Conservative vote.

Mr Mudd, who represented the constituency as MP for 22 years from 1970, told says that he intends to fight the election campaign as an independent on a "people before politics" ticket because of the public's growing apathy with party politics.

He said: "The growing awareness in people in general is that they are fed up with party politics. They are fed up at being ignored by politicians."

Mr Mudd will be opposing Ashley Crossley, the official Tory candidate, who has already faced difficulties following a bust-up with his local party officials who were sacked last year in a row over the showing of a UKIP video at branch meetings.
