Restormel: Planners to Stop Hotel Becoming SupermarketPlanners are hoping to prevent a hotel being turned into a supermarket in Newquay. Council officers are recommending refusal of the application by the German chain Aldi to convert the former Beachcroft Hotel at Newquay. Aldi wants to turn the hotel on Cliff Road into a foodstore and restaurant. Restormel Borough Council planning officers say the design, materials, siting and external appearance of the store is "inappropriate". In their recommendations the planners say the combination of the proposed building of more than 1100 sqm and its surrounding land would be "unattractive in the public realm". They also say the site could still be used for tourism. The design of a similar application by Aldi in Truro was recently turned down on the grounds it looked "too modern". |
