Sense of Place is a Cornwall Local Authority project set up to promote creativity across the curriculum. The project promotes an approach to learning that is creative, cross-curricular and contextualised, introducing exciting learning opportunities for children and providing cross-curricular and easy to use resources for teachers. “The CD Rom provides resources based on events, people and places in Cornwall, to help children in Cornish schools to extend their learning and understanding of the place in which they live” said Will Coleman, Director of the “Sense of Place” Project. . “It is proving very popular with both teachers and children, and is currently being used in a large number of local schools”. The project has three main aims: • to foster creativity, experiential and fun • to enrich educational experience by forging links across all subject areas • to place learning within a personal, social and cultural framework Schools are already using a wide range of units produced by the Sense of Place units team. These include : • ‘Lost your Tongue’, which provides an introduction to the Cornish language through the story of Dolly Pentreath; • “Land of Saints’, which develops knowledge and understanding of the distinctive contribution of Cornish Saints to Cornish history • ‘Wreck and rescue around the Cornish coast’ which examines the location of shipwrecks and rescue ventures around Cornwall. • ‘Giant of Steam’ which examines the life and times of Richard Trevithick. The schools taking part are St Francis, Ludgvan, Lanner, Perranporth, St Michaels, Biscovey Infants, Bishop Cornish, Newquay Junior, Porthleven, Carclaze Infant and Richard Lander School. |
