Kerrier: REGIONALLY IMPORTANT MINING HERITAGE SITE HOST ART DAYOn Saturday 20th May, the National Trust will be hosting ‘Paint & Create’, a day of art workshops at East Pool Mine, Cornish Mines and Engines, in Pool, near Redruth. East Pool Mine is a large site which consists of many buildings and features located in spacious grounds which make it idea for hosting large public events, whatever the weather. The Paint & Create Day workshops will run from 11am to 4pm, and will include: painting and drawing, banner making and design, flag making, badge making, model making, exhibitions, competitions and a giant ‘art attack’. Admission is free for National Trust Members, and for non-members there will be a cost of £4 for adults and £2.50 for children. Guided tours of the site will also be included, and refreshments will be available. Although acquired in 1967, Cornish Mines and Engines has only been managed as a National Trust property since 2005, its day to day running having previously been undertaken by the Trevithick Trust. One of the Trust’s main aims since 2005 has been to gain public support for the site, particularly from the local community, by hosting a broad range of events aimed at encouraging visitors with such diverse interests as arts and crafts, archaeology, science, and of course Cornwall’s mining history. The Art Day is just one of many such events which the Trust will host at the site during the current season. Cornish Mines and Engines consists of two sites: Michell’s which contains the last Rotative Cornish Beam Engine ever made, now in working order again due to a recent restoration project undertaken by the Trust, and East Pool Mine which includes Taylor’s Engine House, the last Cornish Engine House ever built. Both sites are filled with machines, artefacts and interpretation which relate to the County’s industrial past, and are recognised as an important element of the famous Redruth-Camborne Mining District, thereby attracting visitors from all over the world. |
