Restormel: CULTURE MINISTER DAVID LAMMY VISITS NEWQUAY LIBRARYCulture Minister David Lammy will be visiting Newquay Library at 4pm on Friday, June 9th to see for himself the progress being made in transforming the interior into a model for the 21st century library service. The Cornish Library is one of just three libraries across the country chosen by the Museums Libraries and Archives Council to receive a 12 week dramatic makeover as part of the national Love Libraries Project that aims to raise the profile of public libraries and demonstrate what a wide range of services they have to offer. The library will not only get a new look but also new facilities and books in response to customers’ feedback. The library aims to be a place people will want to spend more time in, enjoying its ambience and taking advantage of all of the new services it will offer. The library is currently closed for five weeks while the transformation takes place, with Library staff busy working on the exciting project with designer Tony Coffield, from internationally renowned company Curious Architecture and staff of Library Suppliers Point Eight who have generously donated most of the new fittings required for the project. During Friday’s visit to Newquay the Culture Minister will meet Chris Ramsey, Assistant Chief Executive for Communications and Libraries; Cornwall Library Service Outreach Officer Becky Rowland, who is leading Cornwall’s Love Libraries project and Gill Provis, the Manager of Newquay Library and her staff at the mobile library van which is providing a basic service for customers while the library is closed. “We are delighted that David Lammy is visiting Newquay Library to see the progress we are making on our exciting Love Libraries transformation project “ said Eric Brooke, the County Council’s Executive Member for Community Services. “We are confident that the people of Newquay will be really proud of their new library when it is completed and it should provide a model for us to follow in redeveloping other libraries across the Cornwall “. The library will re-open to the public on Monday, July 3rd when members of the public will be able to see the results of the exciting transformation and take part in a day of special celebrations involving top writers. The Library will also be staging a number of other events with top authors during the week to mark the successful completion of the project. Details of these events will be publicised in the local press during the next few weeks. David Lammy is in Cornwall for a one day trip which will also include visits to the Eden Project and Tate St Ives. |
