Overseas: Interceltic Wrestling to be RevivedA delegation of Cornish wrestling enthusiasts have paid a visit to Brittany with the hope of reviving an Inter-Celtic Wrestling tournament. The visit to Belle-Isle-en-Terre was made in response to to an invitation from the organisation Archives et Memoires de la Lutte Bretonne to celebrate the wrestling tournaments that took place between 1927 and 1985. The Cornish group featured three former Cornish wrestling champions – some of whom were featured in an exhibition showing memorabilia from the tournaments. The exhibition will be moved to Truro next year and a small team of Breton wrestlers say they come over with the exhibition with the notion of settling up a challenge to a Cornish team. A trophy has already been cast for the challenge. Traditionally, in Brittany, the winner of the wrestling contest was awarded a sheep that was carried around the ring on the winner’s shoulders. |
