WHATS YOUR SENSE OF YOUR PLACE?The historic mining towns and villages of West Cornwall have changed dramatically throughout the centuries. Its made them very different from other places. But how are they special and what do they mean to YOU? If you live in the Redruth/Camborne/St Day area, you can enter a new competition to capture whats special about your home ground. There are three different categories to the competition - art, writing and photography. The competition launched on 31 March 2007 and linked to a Visit the Villages campaign as part of this years Mineral Tramways Festival (4-12 August) is split into three different age groups - under 11s, 12s-18s and adults - and there will be prizes for winners in each of the villages and towns taking part, plus major cash prizes for overall winners. Whether its the past or the present, the people you know or tales that have been told, things you can do, places you can go, buildings you can see, or the landscape around you - have a go at expressing what means most to you about living where you do. FREE CREATIVE WORKSHOP PROGRAMME To help get you started in the Sense of Place competition Cornwall County Councils Mineral Tramways Project is funding free creative workshops led by professional artists, writers and photographers at different places throughout the Project area. They will all run from 10am to 4pm with an hours break at lunch time (local shops and pubs available for snacks or bring a packed lunch). Booking at least one week in advance is essential on 01872 323468 (week days 9am-5pm to give an idea of numbers and confirm each session). Bring your own equipment (eg cameras, pen and paper) but materials will also be supplied. If youre aged up to 16, please come with a parent/guardian. Local artists will be invited to bring their work along to show and inspire others and the day will include three workshops directed at different age ranges and levels of ability. 10am-12.30pm St Day walking art for families and young children; 1.30-2.30pm develop creative ideas based on stories & journeys; 2.45-4pm fun but challenging workshop for all. Saturday 14 April CARNKIE AND FOUR LANES Poet and painter Bob Devereux at Carnkie Village Hall (behind Chapel). Draw, paint and write growing out of experiencing the Great Flat Lode trail with Bob. All ages and abilities welcome. Bring watercolours, paper and no 8 brushes if you have them. Pencils and paper to be supplied. Saturday 14 April PORTREATH Artist Peter Skinner at the Millennium Hall Local artists will be invited to bring their work along to show and inspire others and the day will include three workshops led by artist Peter Skinner and directed at different age ranges and levels of ability, from young children and families in the morning to a workshop challenging enough for all in the afternoon. Saturday April 21 REDRUTH/POOL/CAMBORNE Photographer Colin Bradbury at Cornish Mines and Engines, Pool (behind Morrisons) See enormous beam engines, engine house buildings and lots more in a new and creative light. Colin will help you look at this extraordinary site in different ways and help you take truly creative photos. Bring your own digital or other cameras to work with him on site. Saturday 21 April LANNER Artist Stacey Righton at Lanner Village Hall Create something 2D or 3D representing your favourite thing about the area, with inspiration from local photos, stories and other interesting materials supplied by Stacey who will also offer examples of what could be done in a range of media. Please bring any photos or stories you might have to help you develop your creation. Saturday 21 April CARHARRACK Local artist Yvonne Carter at Mills Hall Bring photographs (past or present, people or the local environment) and learn how to transform them into different creations using watercolours. For all aged 10+ SPECIAL EXTRA WRITING WORKSHOP, PORTREATH Friday 13 April at the Millennium Hall, Penberthy Road (10am-4pm) Acclaimed author Rosemary Aitken will be running writing workshop at a cost of £10 per person. Rosemary Aitken is Cornish born and bred and a widely published author of English teaching texts and Cornish historical sagas. She also has a popular series of sleuth novels based in Romano Britain under her maiden name of Rosemary Rowe and is in demand nationally for writing workshops in both genres. . SENSE OF PLACE COMPETITION RULES & REGS 1) How can I take part in the Sense of Place competition? For the Sense of Place competitions there are three categories up to 11 years;12-18 years; 19 years and over. You must live or go to school within the Mineral Tramways Project area, i.e. in Redruth, Camborne, Pool or the following villages/schools: Beacon, Brea, Carn Brea, Carnkie, Chacewater, Cusgarne, Devoran, Four Lanes, Illogan, Kehelland, Lanner, Pencoys, Pennoweth, Penponds, Perran-ar-Worthal, Portreath, Rosemellin, roskear, St Day and Carharrack, St Meriadoc, Stithians, Treleigh, Treloweth, Trevithick, Trewirgie, Troon, Weeth. Please complete an entry form (available at the workshops and from schools and libraries throughout the area) for each entry and may submit up to three entries i.e. one in each category or three in one. If you cant find entry forms in your town or village, please download them from www.cornwall.gov.uk/mineral-tramways or phone 01872 323468 to request them. Please see where and when to deliver entries depending on the area you live in (see Workshop and Delivery Programme). 2) How should I present my entry? All entries should be the original work of the entrant. Paintings should be unmounted and preferably not too large. Photographs may be taken on traditional or digital cameras. Prints (either colour or black and white) should be unmounted and preferably not too large. Model release permission should be obtained where images include posed subject. Access to original negatives or files may be required for winning entries. Poetry and essays (two copies of each entry) should fit onto no more than 2 A4 pages, preferably one for poems, and be handwritten in clear, large handwriting or printed out in an easily readable font and point size (eg Arial 14pt). 3) What if I win? During the Mineral Tramways Festival (4-12 August) local residents and visitors to the village and Cornwall Centre displays will be asked to nominate their favourite competition entries. If you come first in any of the three age categories you will win free family entry tickets to mining heritage sites in the area. You will be contacted and your work will go on to the next round of the competition to be displayed with all other winning entries at the Cornwall Centre, Redruth from 15 -31 August. A celebrity judge will select the winning entry in each age category and winners will receive a cheque or prize to the value of £50 (up to 11 years), £100 (12-18 years), and £200 (19 years and over) at a prize-giving ceremony during the exhibition. 4) What if I go to a local school? Schools and colleges may deliver their entries as a group before the end of the summer term if they contact their local village/display organiser to arrange delivery. Otherwise a school representative should deliver all entries from the school as indicated in the Display and Delivery Programme. Each individual entry must be accompanied by an entry form. 5) Do I own my entry? You will retain copyright and ownership of your entry. Winning entries or copies of them may be used in a mobile exhibition and other material planned for the 2008 launch of new mining trails created by the Mineral Tramways Project. Winners will be consulted about the details. 6) Will my work be protected? Work will be handled as carefully as possible but we can not be held responsible for any damage caused to it. Entries submitted on paper may have some form of adhesive put on the reverse for display purposes - please protect by laminating or sealing in a transparent cover if required. 7) Can I get my entry back if I dont win? We are not able to return entries but you may collect them if you wish. With the exception of winning entries (see above), you can collect entries from the appropriate display location as soon as the display ends (typically 4-5pm 11 or 12 August). Please label your entry with a sticker saying This entry will be collected at the end of the display so that it can be separated from those that do not need to be collected. If the collection date is inconvenient, please contact the appropriate display coordinator to arrange an alternative collection date.
