Celebrate Cornish Mining Heritage with Free Entry to AttractionsThe Cornish Mining Attractions Marketing Association (CMAMA) has announced seven new members ahead of the WHS Open Days to be held on Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April. The open days will be an opportunity to share Cornwall’s wealth of historical mining attractions with local people. Since the region celebrated gaining World Heritage Site status for the mining culture and landscape of Cornwall and West Devon last year, ten key visitor attractions have been working hard to refine their services and facilities in order to be listed as WHS visitor centres. All the attractions below have now met the high service standards required and earned the prestigious WHS logo: Morwellham Quay, Nr Tavistock Cornish Mines & Engines, Pool Geevor Tin Mine, Nr Penzance Cotehele, Nr Saltash Trevarno Estate & Gardens, Nr Helston Tavistock Museum King Edward Mine, Camborne Poldark Mine (Underground Tour Only) Levant Mine, Pendeen The Count House, Bottallack Deborah Boden, of the WHS Cornwall office, said: “We have overseen and endorsed the first tranche of ten visitor attractions who are now able to advertise the fact that they are part of Cornwall’s mining World Heritage Site. All the attractions that are part of the story will eventually be evaluated for all the criteria, and earn the WHS endorsement.” The seven new attractions to become CMAMA members this year are: Royal Cornwall Museum Liskeard & District Museum Kit Hill Country Park Cornish Studies Library Mineral Tramways Trails Gwennap Pit China Clay Country Park (Associate Member) CMAMA was set up by Cornwall County Council following the successful bid for World Heritage status by the World Heritage Site Bid Partnership. The Bid was in preparation for almost five years and included extensive public consultation. Ten areas throughout Cornwall and West Devon were chosen to represent the different facets of Cornish mining as part of the Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Over the weekend of 31st March/1st April, CMAMA attractions all over the region will have special offers including free entry, guided walks and special displays. Visitors will be able to find out about the historical and cultural significance of the World Heritage Site and discover links to other sites which tell the story of Cornish Mining and its integral part in making the region what it is today. Do you have ideas about your locality and your community? Local artists will be invited to bring their work along to show and inspire others and the day will include three workshops directed at different age ranges and levels of ability. 10am-12.30pm – St Day walk for families and young children using Diane’s art cart; 1.30-2.30pm – develop creative ideas based on stories and journeys; 2.45-4pm – fun but challenging workshop for all including the seasoned artist.10am to 4pm with an hour’s break at lunch time (local shops and pubs available for snacks or bring a packed lunch). Time 12 noon - 2pm Booking 01872 323468 (9am-5pm week days) LISKEARD & DISTRICT MUSEUM To celebrate the official opening of the West Devon and Cornwall Mining Landscape World Heritage Site there will be a special mining display in the Daniel Gumb Room at Liskeard and District Museum. This is designed to tell the story of mining in the Caradon area and of the harsh working conditions for the workers. The display will include photographs, many examples of different local minerals (some from Wheal Phoenix that have not been on display before) and information. Admission is free and the exhibition will take place from 31st March 2007 until the end of April. The opening hours for the Museum are weekdays 11am to 4pm and Saturday mornings 11am to 1.30pm. KIT HILL COUNTRY PARK Date: 31st March 2007 Event Title : ‘All that remains – Kit Hill as part of the WHS’ Brief Description: Join the Kit Hill wardens for a walk around the highest part of the Tamar Valley World Heritage Site, looking at the numerous remains of mining and quarrying from medieval times to the mid 20th Century.
