Kerrier: Sense of place competition launched in St Day at creative workshopThe first of six free creative workshops took place this weekend in St Day to launch the ‘Sense of Place’ Competition for budding artists, writers and photographers. The competition challenges people to convey what’s special about the former Redruth/Camborne/St Day mining area, which is one of the ten other areas which form part of Cornwall and West Devon Mining’s World Heritage Site. The competition was launched by local County Councillor Mark Kaczmarek who attended a creative workshop led by heritage artist Diane Spiers, at St Day Methodist Church. Local artists were invited to take along their work to show and inspire others and the day included three workshops directed at different age ranges and levels of ability. The day started with a walk around St Day for families and young children using Diane’s ‘art cart’. The Sense of Place competition is split into three different age groups – under 11s, 12s-18s and adults – and there will be major cash prizes for overall winners in each group. The free creative workshops, engineered to help inspire entrants, will be led by a professional writer, artist or photographer, in six different places throughout the area. The creative workshops are all FREE OF CHARGE but advance booking is essential on 01872 323468 (week days 9am-5pm). Under 16s should be accompanied by a parent/guardian. The workshops and competition are funded by the Mineral Tramways Heritage Project, run by Cornwall County Council and Kerrier District Council and organised in conjunction with a “Visit the Villages” campaign as part of this year’s Mineral Tramways Festival (4-12 August). All competition entries will be displayed at six different venues as part of the Festival when local people and visitors will be invited to select the winning entries. Full details of and entry forms for the Sense of Place art, writing and photography competition are downloadable from www.cornwall.gov.uk/mineral-tramways <http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/mineral-tramways> .
