Caradon: Caradon and Global WarningCaradon needs to meet the challenges of global warming and oil depletion and on Friday 12th October Transition Caradon will be organising the first of a series of events to raise awareness about the global warming and oil depletion. There will be a film showing of The End of Suberbia which explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply the film will be followed by a discussion and ideas for local community initiatives. The End of Suburbia will be shown The Liskerret Community Centre, Liskeard, at 7.30pm, admission is £2-50 Across the country awareness is rising about the impact of decreasing oil production will have on peoples lives. Under the banner of "Transition Towns" people are coming together with the aim of developing a strategy of preparing for the transition from an economy based on cheap oil and high energy consumption to one that uses less energy. Transition Caradon aims to raise awareness of Transition initiatives that already exist across the world and in the UK and to help local communities within Caradon develop there own initiatives to deal with climate change and oil depletion and the transition to an economy that consumes less energy. Over the coming months other events are planned across Caradon including film shows and discussions with the aim of helping local communities develop their own Transition initiatives. Klaudia VanGool, group coordinator says *"Transition initiatives are really important. We want to spread the word about the two challenges of oil depletion and global warming and get people motivated to take action." * The group are looking for individuals, groups, community centers, village halls, parish councils or community leaders that would like to get involved or to host a transition event. For more information contact Klaudia VanGool on 01579 346487 or visit www.transitiontowns.org or www.endofsuburbia.com About End of Suburbia Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid /The End of Suburbia/ ? _Background information:_ Transition Caradon is an initiative to raise awareness and then facilitate local projects to reduce our long term dependency on fossil fuels. Initially we are putting together a programme of thought provoking films to travel round the key towns and make them available for other local groups & places to show. It follows the methodology first tried out in Kinsale and then Totnes. In response to the twin pressures of Peak Oil and Climate Change, some pioneering communities in the UK and Ireland are taking an integrated and inclusive approach to reduce their carbon footprint and increase their ability to withstand the fundamental shift that will accompany Peak Oil. The transition initiatives currently in progress in the UK represent the most promising way of engaging people and communities to take the far-reaching actions that are required to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil and Climate Change. Kinsale 2021 – an Energy Descent Action Plan The first draft of the Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) was completed in 2005. It sets out how Kinsale, an Irish town in West Cork of about 7,000 people, could make the transition from a high energy consumption town to a low energy one in response to the challenge of the impending peaking of world oil production. This has been followed by Transition Town Totnes. The thinking behind TTT is simply that a town using much less energy and resources than currently consumed could, if properly planned for and designed, be more resilient, more abundant and more pleasurable that the present. Other towns and areas that have followed Totnes include: Bristol, Penwith, Lambeth, Stroud etc. For more information see: www.transitiontowns.org |
