BUILDING SIX NEW PENZANCES IS NOT THE ANSWERCommenting on the plans to force Cornwall to build 68,700 new homes by 2026, local MP, Andrew George, argued that excessive house building was “part of the problem, not the solution”. Mr George, who is a member of the Commons Communities and Local Government Select Committee and co-author of the book Cornwall at the Crossroads which challenged the thinking behind the then County Structure Plan 20 years ago said: “Cornwall is a classic example of the failure of housing-led growth strategies. Cornwall has more than doubled its housing stock in the last 40 years. Indeed it has been one of the fastest growing places in the country over that period and yet the housing problems of local people have got worse. “Recent Cornish history seems to show that simply building more houses is not itself the answer. “Limited development land should be used to build affordable homes for locals not unaffordable homes. These decisions are better made in Cornwall than made for Cornwall by outside agencies.” |
