Kerrier: Council resolves to apply for funding to investigate Troon Adit stabilisation

Parts of Troon village have been affected by flooding and ground movement which has been attributed to a blocked structure known as ‘Troon Adit’, which is associated with past mining activity in the area.

A grant from English Partnerships allowed Kerrier District Council to commission preliminary ground investigation works but these were inconclusive. In order to gather more knowledge and attempt to identify a solution to the problem further investigation is necessary.

At a meeting of Kerrier’s Cabinet on 8 January, Members resolved to make an application to English Partnerships for funding to allow these further investigation works to take place. Kerrier will be contributing towards the cost of the works and Officers are now working on the bid for funding to English Partnerships’ Land Stabilisation Programme. It is expected that this will be ready by mid February. If a grant is forthcoming, then the investigation works will be put out to competitive tender.

Councillor Mrs Carolyn Rule, Kerrier’s Portfolio Holder for Economy and Regeneration said: “This has been a long standing problem for the residents of Troon and everyone affected by the problems has my deepest sympathy.

Whilst we are doing the best that we can for the villagers, we must reiterate that Kerrier is not responsible for the adit structure, and any associated problems therefore any works carried out are done on a ‘without prejudice’ basis. We will do all that we can to help, and are committed to helping our residents find a satisfactory solution to this problem.”

Phil Walsh, Head of Service for the Environment added: “Our involvement in this case is that of facilitator, Kerrier District Council is not responsible for the structure or its repair; however we are involved because it is affecting the wellbeing of our community. In connection with the actions we now propose to take for more site investigation works, we do so on a ‘without prejudice’ basis.

Obviously we hope that the funding application to English Partnerships is successful so that we can take the next step towards a more permanent solution for the residents of Troon.”
