SOUTH WEST WATER PRICE HIKE

Commenting on today’s announced above inflation price increase of water rates for metered and un-metered customers, West Cornwall MP, Andrew George said:

“Whilst this will hit older and poorer people the system remains a relatively risk-free money printing organisation for the water company.

“Bizarrely, the metering of separate households has very much worked to the benefit of second home owners and those in larger and more expensive housing – i.e. those who could afford to pay more for their water. At the same time, there are thousands of mainly elderly people who live in sheltered accommodation who cannot benefit from the much lower bills they would pay if they could go on to a water meter.

“The Government has made some welcome noises about wanting to do something to help poorer customers but little of substance is being achieved. I hope that that does not merely add up to a smoke screen behind which the sorry tale of the poor subsidising the rich continues to go on,” said Mr George.

South West Water announced today that metered charges would be going up by 5.6% and un-metered by 8.7%.
