CIVIL PARKING ENFORCEMENT LEAFLET AVAILABLE TO ANSWER QUESTIONSA new leaflet is available to explain how civil parking will be enforced in Cornwall when the Police relinquish responsibility next month. The Council has applied to the Department for Transport (DfT) for Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) powers. If the application is successful the responsibility for enforcing on street parking transferred from the Police to the County Council from 5 May. Until the powers are granted to the County responsibility for enforcement remains with the police. It should also be noted that other offences, such as obstruction and moving offences, will remain the responsibility of the police after 5 May. The leaflet answers the main questions people are likely to have – What is Civil Parking Enforcement? Will I be affected? What is a Penalty Charge Notice and what should I do if I get one? The leaflet also offers guidance on how to park safely and gives people a reminder of some of the common waiting restrictions. The leaflet has been produced in conjunction with Carrick District Council and Restormel Borough Council who will be carrying out enforcement on behalf of the County. Cornwall County Councils Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Transport Matt McTaggart (Lib Dem) said “At the moment parking enforcement is the job of the police and traffic wardens, without the same powers. We are trying to assist road users to understand what changes will be in place after 5th May and how they directly concern all motorists and will benefit everyone. Of course the changes will not affect motorists who park their vehicles correctly and the leaflet also reminds motorists how they should be parking”. The leaflet can be obtained at council offices and libraries, on the County Council’s website at www.cornwall.gov.uk/parking, by phoning: 01872 222000 or by post from the Civil Parking Enforcement Team: New County Hall, Treyew Road, Truro, TR1 3AY. |
