Equality and Human Rights Commission Awareness Event - Cornish excluded again? The Regional Head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission is visiting Cornwall on the 28th May 2008 to deliver a conference to Cornwall Council and their Equality Partners to explain the responsibilities of the newly formed organisation the Equality and Human Rights Commissions (EHRC). The EHRC has amalgamated the Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission. They now cover all 6 strands of Equality: Disability, Race, Gender (including Transgender), Sexual Orientation, Faith and Religious belief and Age, providing a central equality enforcement and advisory organisation. The event is being hosted by Cornwall County Council and the delegates attending the event range from County Councillors, County and District Council Staff, NHS, Police, Housing associations and other Equality partners. Sheila Healy, Chief Executive of Cornwall County Council said “Equality and Diversity is a key area of work for Cornwall County Council. We are working jointly with our partners to demonstrate that we embrace equality and human rights for all. By promoting a new understanding of the equality and human rights culture we can work together to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society”. Prior to the conference there will be a small exhibition in the Long Gallery from various Equality Groups, including Cornwall Centre for Volunteers, Travellerspace and Stonham, to demonstrate the Equality activities that are taking place throughout the County. The County Council corporate equality display will also be on show. |
