COUNCILS CONSIDER ST PIRAN'S DAY PROPOSAL


Following the League's St Piran's Day 2008 campaign to persuade all town and city councils in Cornwall to follow Bodmin Town Council's lead and declare March 5th a public holiday for their employees, St Blaise Town Council have written to the League to say that during their March meeting the Council decided that they "would like to see it come into effect".

In one year’s time the new unitary council for Cornwall will begin. On 1 April 2009, the services currently delivered by the District, Borough and 'County' Council will be delivered by a new single council.

Hospital admissions due to alcohol increase by 50%


Hospital admissions specifically due to alcohol increased by more than 50% in the South West between 2001 and 2005, according to a report published today (2 April 2008) by the South West Public Health Observatory.

The report also highlighted that an estimated three quarters of a million (728,500) people aged 16-64 in the region drink to hazardous levels and that around 119,000 are dependent drinkers.

Public Bodies currently spend £123 billion of public money, the equivalent of 9.3% of GDP.

Isles of Scilly Link Proposals contract awarded to develop designs


The Executive Committee of Cornwall Council has unanimously agreed to approve the award of a contract to Birse Coastal. The contract will be to develop the design proposals, seek planning consents and determine a works cost for improvements at Penzance and St Mary’s harbours.
