The European Commission (EU) has approved an additional £24 million of funding to help redevelop Newquay Airport. The EU said it approved the grant because it was satisfied that the airport’s transition to a fully civilian airport conformed to their criteria and was beneficial to the development of Cornwall’s economy.

Goodbye. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Cornwall needs infrastructure and development like this, it's the 21st century not the Dark Ages. Look at some satellite images, there's still plenty of space for housing in Cornwall, in contrast to the claims of the "they're concreting over Cornwall" sensationalists.

Perhaps, truru, you need a few more floods like yesterday's and the many more of recent years to convince you that overdevelopment and proliferation of hardstanding on the high ground above and around and the flood plains within Cornwall's long embedded settlements is not such a good idea and that we should be aiming to use our existing abundant residential housing stock for its intended purpose – residence.

I think talking in general terms everyone would agree with the above to a degree, but there is a balance to be worked towards. What will be questioned is the other part of your comment in which you state "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" as it's very difficult to get clear agreement on what constitutes the "needs of the many"  and who decides?  Yes we would all like enough money in our pockets to feel secure, but some need less than others to reach that point. Some will except less money in their pockets for what they would consider a better quality of life.

When it comes to housing, the first priority must be to look at existing and unused housing stock.  For example, Lord Falmouth's many empty cottages and houses.  These should be refurbished and affordably rented to local families.  If he won't do, then let the Council compulsorily purchase them.

The Planning Department needs to open its eyes, too.  Here in Newbridge, I've identified a good site that could accommodate three or four affordable homes.  It could also provide discreet parking for the residents of the western end of the village, where safe parking is at a premium.  The planners won't have it, but this land could be so developed without detriment to the village or its surroundings.

Of course, expansion of the airport will kick off "carbon footprint" moans but let's get this into proportion.  The next volcano that blows its top will discharge far more of this into the atmosphere in a few days than this entire country could achieve in a decade.

Re unused housing stock..

Interesting comment on the This is Cornwall website to the news article on Conservative Party plans to revitalise rural communities if/when they get into power…

"Torys are saying a lot these days. Without thinking things through or explaining anything. Desperately trying to find out what we want to hear and saying it… What does "The rules on taking over empty properties will be relaxed" Mean?…….."
