For a taste of Tory opinion on the Cornish question have a look at the response received below from Ashley Fox MEP for the South West.
Thank you for your email which I read with interest.
As a Member of the European Parliament I am pleased to say that it is
not within my power to interfere with the Constitutional arrangements of
the United Kingdom. As it happens, I do not support any form of
devolved assembly for Cornwall nor for the Cornish to be recognised as a
national minority.
Yours sincerely
Ashley Fox
So with the news that David Camerons new European parliamentary group is already on the brink of collapse I ask again what use are the Tories to Kernow?

Funny how David Cameron created the Shadow Minister for Cornwall and used the word Duchy instead of county isn't it?
It's funny how Canada recognises Cornish people as an ethnicity and the 2001 census did too! My understanding of so-called British justice and the laws of England and Wales (but as we know "English" law is selective about its application in Cornwall) was that once a precedent is set it is set unless circumstances or times change so much it is not longer considered applicable- 2001-2011, what's changed?

The assembly I can understand at a push, a rational argument may be put forward, but why not a national minority? What possible rational reason could there be for that?

The Tories may not be much use to Kernow but a lot of people voted for them recently and they now effectively control the Council. David Mudd was an okay Tory. In fact, before MK became a political party, I believe I am right in saying that he was a member of it.

And Andrew George of course. Were any prominent Labour members in MK before it became a party?

I don't think so but I am no authority on this. That said, Frank Harold Hayman was an excellent Labour MP for Camborne and Redruth and well regarded locally. He often referred to his Cornishness in his speeches.
This is a fair website showing Cornish notables, worthies and those with strong connections with our Nation.

Considering how many noteworthy people who have contributed so much in every field originally came from Kernow, it seems difficult to refer to us as 'inbred' etc. as discussed in other threads and which the English seem to like to do from time to time when putting us in our place or underlining their superiority when they feel threatened.

On what justification does Ashley Fox make his assertions? As he does not live in Cornwall and is not Cornish, what right does he have to comment?

Has anyone asked the shadow minister for Cornwall Mark Prisk or David Cameron if they support any form of devolved assembly for Cornwall or for the Cornish to be recognised as a national minority ?

They should be asked again as should all the newly elected council members.
A response from Prisk was in a thread on the old C24

Found it below (scroll down to bottom of page) – what about Cameron – did he reply ?
http://209.85.229.132/search?q…..&gl=uk
"Administratively Cornwall has been treated as a County and you are right that this fails to recognise that Cornwall and the Cornish sense of identity are unique. Both you and I may be émigrés, but we both still feel a sense of Cornish identity.
My main concern is that all recent reorganisations have dragged decision making east of the Tamar. The Regional Assemblies are a good example of this and it's why my Party intends to scrap them.
It is also why the Conservatives intend to end the regional planning diktat and return to the Cornish people – and their representatives – the power to decide what is built in their communities and where it is built. We are also looking at what other powers can be returned, for example in the field of local economic development. In that sense we are more considered with handing back specific powers than the wider debate about an Assembly versus the new unitary council.
The plans for that unitary have been poorly prepared and pushed through without a popular mandate, by the Labour and LibDem parties. However it is now going to happen and it's important that we try and make the best of the situation."
Yours sincerely
Mark Prisk MP
