Swiftie is a very fine artist - just because he doesnt paint in oil on canvas or whatever an artist in Cornwall is supposed to do. The guy who wrote this is a right wing bigot who needs his head examined. I cant believe Cornwall today were willing to publish it. edited by: jossiejojo, Mar 01, 2007 - 10:53 PM |

I am proud to say that Cornwall Today has indeed published my art rant; this is a step in the right direction. We should stamp out these so-called 'artists' before they get to ahead of themselves and take root. Look at what Art has become in London and other large cities! And it's don’t’ be fooled people… this rubbish creeping down into Cornwall even as I write. Artists like Swiftie have zero talent and are destroying the legacy has been hard earned here in Cornwall. I took part in the debate sometime ago on this forum and I know that I am among like-minded people with similar passions. I cannot sit back any longer be nonchalant about the fact that these charlatans are ruining chances for the real and true artists of this land to get decent exhibition space. If you don’t think things are getting worse then just take a look at the new Tate St Ives ART NOW CORNWALL exhibition, and if that wasn’t bad enough the Goldfish gallery has hosted a show of the same name, Swiftie’s work is included in the latter show and typifies everything that is bad, ignorant and lazy in art and both these exhibitions. I call to all members of Cornwall24 to join the A.S.A, just email me at anti-swiftie@hotmail.co.uk and will post you your welcome pack and add you to the mailing list where you’ll be informed of any protests etc that are planned to rid Cornwall bad art. Thank you for reading Hubris (ASA, stamping out bad art in Cornwall) |

Hubris - we are living in a 21st century western democracy. You cant really speak like that about artists or anyone who is exercising their right to free speech. edited by: jossiejojo, Mar 01, 2007 - 11:02 PM |

Dear Jossiejojo, I can assure you that I do not need my head examined; I know what is rubbish art and I know what is good art! Swiftie’s work IS rubbish art, not only that it’s vandalism too!! I put it to you that it’s you that needs your head examined if you like his work. The skill it takes to make an oil painting like Nick Williams is almost God-like; you can’t say the same for Swiftie can you? This we MUST agree on. Right wing, yes I am in fact, not that it matters to you really… I am proud of my position and I have spoken to many people about artists like him… I can tell you that people are not happy with the way art is going in Cornwall, look around, talk to a few people… you might learn a few things jojo. I speak for the people |

Not only does it anger me, but it angers almost everyone I talk to about it day to day - yes, i've done my research. Scribbling on peoples walls or worse National Trust property or akin does not count as art… in fact you can’t really ask me that question because I don’t think it IS art. It’s just pathetic and it’s shouldn’t be entertained or indulged. I also blame the galleries, they should know better and I’ll be writing to them and telling them what I think in due course. I’d like more members behind me first. |

I read that there is "no agreed-upon definition of art", but I don't agree with that. |

I forgot to say, here is the website I've put up, I'm working on making it better but time is limited (need to spend more time with the wife), adding photos of graffiti I've personally cleaned in Cornwall. It's a free website because I'm trying to keep costs down. http://www.freewebs.com/anti-swiftie/index.htm |

FlammNew - I hope you didn't mind that quote being used in Cornwall Today, it fitted so well!! I should have asked first, sorry. I enjoyed your point of view on the other thread about art, and thought you were pretty much bullied throughout... you, Cledrey Maid and a few others. |

Art, the same as many other things is about personal opinion. I dare say that your view of Art is different to many others Hubis. I think that you need to be careful not to make it into a personal vendetta. It's like TV, if you do not like what you are watching you can turn off or over. If you do not like an Artist then you don't have to view his/her work. If there are people who like his work, surely it is their right to view it, the same as is yours not to. edited by: angofbew, Mar 02, 2007 - 09:30 PM |

Cornwall Today - don't you mean 'England Today' but based in Cornwall? How many members of staff of Cornwall 'is a nice place to retire and invest in apart from the locals' Today are Cornish? None. |

Hubris, apart from trying to force your opinions on what Art is, what have you contributed to anything? A simple question to which the answer might be of interest to the contributors to this Forum. |

I haven't tried to force my opinion of what art is, only what it isn't. This is my contribution. edited by: Hubris, Mar 03, 2007 - 12:45 PM |

Wordplay my friend. It is YOUR opinion, like I said, if others think of what you think is not Art as Art then you are trying to force your opinion. No matter which way you try to use Language to justify what you are doing it is the same thing. Maybe you should channel your energy into something more relevant to Peoples asperations, Charity Work perhaps. Instead of taking an I am right, you are wrong, position, on something that is all about personal choice. |
