I'm a Saxon learning Cornish (if such things are allowed!), and interested in how the majority of Cornish people want themselves and Cornwall to be perceived within Great Britain. Does anybody have any insight into this? I've read about the 2001 census fiasco, which would imply that only 7% of people living in Cornwall are Cornish (yeah, right!). 50% sounds more reasonable. Correct me if I'm wrong. Do the majority of Cornish people want Cornwall to continue to be perceived as a county? Or do they prefer duchy? Or something entirely different? Maybe it's not that simple. The song was written by a Cornish man who up until five years ago knew little of the culture and heritage of his people. As well as being a musician he is an avid sports man he is also campaigning for Cornwall's recognition in the Common Wealth games. There are a lot of Cornish people who seem confused about their heritage etc, it is not encouraged by the Anglocentric Government. There are some very knowledgeable people on this site, if they sometimes come across as anti English they are not referring to the English people but to the English establishment that suppresses them. The whole Celtic/Anglo-Saxon polarity thing is a bit misleading. I might be misinterpreting the facts, but my understanding of population genetics is that most of the inhabitants of these islands are direct descendants of Mesolithic and Neolithic settlers, and only a small percentage descended from subsequent Belgic, Roman, and Germanic invaders.
