I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knew of my mother Gwendoline Hicks, (nee Durrant), my grandmother Beatrice Ellen Rolling, (nee Durrant, nee Northcott), my grandfather Charles Durrant or my great-uncle Charles Northcott. My mother died when I was aa years old, in 1955. I was taken care of by my grandmother for a short time, and then placed in the care of a foster family with whom I have since made contact, but who know nothing of my family. My father took me to Australia when I was 15 years old. I have been told that my grandfather owned a news agency in Penzance, maybe in the late 1930s. He died in 1949. He had other family, and I believe his father was Melchisidek Durrant. My grandmother owned the Star Hotel in Newlyn, and then Trevorrow Guest House, and retired to St Judes in Plymouth. Anyone with any information can contact me by e-mail at bramsell@tpg.com.au or write to John Hicks, 12/52 Back Street, Biggera Waters Queensland 4216, Australia |

My mother used to be friends with the girl who's family ran the Star on Newlyn, I think she was called Vera and her surname might have been Durrant. I've heard mum metion Durrants newsagents over the years. There's a web site for newlyn and they've also got a forum, you may get some luck there. I think it's www.newlyn.info/ |

Dear Diane, Vera was my mother's sister. Thank you for your comments. I have looked at the web page you noted, and will follow it up. I would like to keep in touch with you. Are you living in NSW? Were you born in Newlyn? As I left Newlyn when I was eleven, I had no opportunity to get to know any of the family. Now that I am getting older it is bothering me that I have not tried to make contact sooner. Thanks again for the info, John Hicks |

My mother was born in Newlyn, I was born in St Just. My grandparents lived on Old Paul Hill. The first cottage, [all the cottages look as if their holiday lets now] My Auntie Janie lived in Orchard Place and my Uncle Johnny lived in Jack Lane, these were mum's siblings. Only one cousin living there now, and another cousin in Moushole. I live in NSW, spent most of my time in Victoria, we moved here to retire. I've been out here for almost 34yrs. I've posted a few times on the newlyn site, talking about memories of newlyn, you may find something that you remember in those postings. Diane |
