Ian Posts: 334 Posted: 26.Feb 2006 - 01:59	Yes this is a result of the Irish citizenship referendum in June, 2004 when the people of Ireland voted to change the law on citizenship. Following the Irish Government published the proposed new legislation on citizenship in September 2004 and as you say the new law came into effect at the start of 2005. Do you (Shaz) think it's a good law? (The Irish Government cannot introduce legislation in Ireland that conflicts with Bunreacht na hEireann (the basic law or Constitution of the country). Sometimes it is necessary therefore, to change or amend the Constitution. Each time the Government wishes to change or amend the Constitution, it must do it by holding a referendum. A referendum gives the people of Ireland opportunity to express their opinion and vote for or against the proposed change or amendment.)

Lets remember Vortigern invited the Saxons to repel Irish pirates who were then raiding western Britain along with the Picts from the north. The irish really shouldn't complain. This law is to stop all the immigrants from the middle east Turkey etc from getting a toe hold in Ireland. Smart move on their part if they want to avoid the coming European civil war and protect their culture.
