Further to a few comments about the new road system in Penzance, which seems to have been the biggest waste of money imaginable, I thought it might be an idea to try and get some other instances of the appaling road planning in Cornwall.

I just spotted the BBC article:
One-way system sparks road rage
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/england/cornwall/5093798.stm
ans thought this is probably going on all over the place. Maybe could compile a list of greivances and send it over to CCC.

My personal favourite at the moment is the lack of any crossing between Queens Hotel and Newlyn on Penzance Promenade. [slight aside, I notice they haven't fixed the prom 2 years after it was damaged but they have managed to wreck the town centre with the ne traffic system!]
Anyway, there are no road crossings on this stretch of road, which regularly sees cars travelling at 40-50mph on and there is a basketball court, skate park, childrens playground, bowling club and beach on the other side. So either enforce the speed limit or put a crossing there - obvious really (apparently not if you are a planner)

Why on earth would they put a crossing there when they are mad enough to make the pavement from Wherrytown to the Jubilee Pool a cycle track where pedestrians walk. My elderly in-laws used to walk along there until some mad idiot cyclist was hurtling along with no thought for anyone and nearly broke my father-in-law's wrist as he hit him on his way past. Any fool could see it was a dangerous thing to do. Don't, under any circumstances, expect any sort of sense from those idiots in Truro.

The cycle track is a great idea! Half the pedestrians don't even know it's a cycle path so either scowl at you or practically have a heart attack when you pedal past them. The icing on the cake is as soon as the road becomes more dangerous with a wall at the side and a 200 metre straight cyclists are forced back onto the road.
I tell you monkies with pencils couldn't come up with worse!

If they actually showed any interest in enforcing the speed limit on that stretch of road there wouldn't be any need for a cycle path

Have you been round the new 'Chyverton Roundabout' yet, not sure how much money they have wasted here, but they would have been better to have built the 'legs' for a fly over, than what they have done.
When its busy the traffic for Bodmin & the A30 has to line up with the Truro bound traffic, down the fast lane of the dual carriageway!
Of course, if they did it right first time, there wouldn't be enough work to keep all of then gamely employed.

A traffic light was put in in St Just, caused traffic jams and was removed.

Chris is right, you need a crossing in Penzance by LIDL and again at the bottom of the Lidden, and then you could throw in another one at the bottom of Alexandra Rd.

The so called cycle path was a disaster, there's a lot more info on that at http://www.livingstreets.org.uk/branch.php?brandid=43&id=penwith

Instead of putting in crossings and improving things, councils waste an enormous amount of time and effort on things that make things worse, there's also the Newlyn Green unnecessarly cycle path fiasco http://www.newlyn.info/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=001;action=display;num=1131394319

I was home when the lights were installed in St Just, everyone thought it was a stupid place to put lights, why the "powers that be" didn't listen to locals on that occasion beats me. A friend lives over the fruit shop, beside the lights and one set would have been right in front of one of her windows, that was rectified, but what a waste of money it was, if it wasn't for that waste it would have been laughable icon_rolleyes

See what they've done in Newlyn. Changed the priorities at the crossroads about 3 times in the last 15 years, still haven't got it right.
Just drove into Penzance - not even holiday season but there was a tailback all the way to the Tesco roundabout. Should be interesting in a months time!

You should see the queue trying to get OUT of Penzance, it's one long line from Tesco's roundabout to the Steamship Company's weighbridge by the Dolphin pub.

Oh well, I've just ordered myself a fancy new bicycle. Wonder if I could get a grant for that, being a company?!

Those tailbacks are because of roadworks near 3 tunnels though - that's why it's particularly bad.

Yes they always work on the roads, when they get busy don't they? We have a problem with pot holes here, everytime it rains we get pot holes, then the council comes along and patches them up, until the next rainy day. It's driving us mad. we need new road surfaces, but no money for that. I'm 12,000 miles from you lot and things are just the same everywhere really, Amazing :o

There was a lot of opposition to the Penzace one way system, so I'd like to see someone do a list of the pros and cons and tell us how they decided on it and how they review it. Less traffic in Market Jew St now, but has it all gone into Chapel St, Bread St etc? More or less accidents? More or less trade in Market Jew St? What did it all cost? Are they serious about splashing out on a new fountain in Market Jew St, and has that been put out to tender?

Yes even my apathetic mother went to the public meeting. No one was in favour. I guess they just figure that everyone who gets of their arse and complains is a no vote, everyone who does nothing is a yes vote.

It's the same deal with residents parking. The council get to charge you £50 a year for a chance to park outside your house and the opportunity to give tickets to residents who don't cough up. I know loads of people who objecte in the Battlefield area but they still brought it in.

As for the cycle lane in Sunflower's link. WTF! Yes I've seen it hundreds of times but never really thought about it. I'm going to try and find the name of the person responsible for that and publish it here!

That actually, and openly happened in, I think it was in Camelford.
The council wanted to introduce 'pay & display' charges in the shoppers car park.
Lots of people voted against plan, but the council took the non voters as a 'yes vote' and went ahead with their scheme!.
So much for democracy.
