Someone has asked me on another forum why we aren't english - are there any links to simple articles that explain it? I don't want to give them links to lengthy intelectual disputes as it's not that kind of forum but I don't want them just to take my word for it either.

"......if we aren't english why do we pay english taxes."

This is why we need some form of devolution such as Wales & Scotland.

The Lib Dems Cornwall manifesto for 2005 elections was clear. One heading in the document declared “It’s time for a Cornish Assembly!” But they seem to be dragging their feet on this issue.

I would rather pay my taxes to a Cornish treasury that would be used for the people of Cornwall. Untill we all get off our butts and lobby our various councillors and MP's I can't see anything happening in the near future. :x

You need to point out to people like that that we don't pay "English taxes" but in fact UK Taxes and that we don't have an English passport but a UK one.

A clarifiaction of the difference between the words state, country, nation and citizenship is also worthwhile but often pointless when faced with "you're English so shut up".

What happened in the court case that involved the self-proclaimed stannators a few years back ('english' heritage signs)?

I heard the case was dropped 'in the national interest'??

A point to note!
All the NATIONAL carriers count CORNWALL under ENGLAND, and charge a standard charge, parts of Scotland and Ireland have to pay extra!

So, 'cornish'miner, what does that tell us about either the issue or the 'National Carriers'? (Who they?)

Wales doesn't have tax raising powers.

Exactly.

Unfortunately, by those definitions Cornwall is a county.

Stoppy for the vast majority of UK citizens Cornwall is a county, but the question why this is so must be asked when in fact our constitutional position is quite different!

So you accept that we are a nation, even if a stateless one?

The national carries regard Cornwall as just another county of England, if they thought we were any different we would pay higher charges.

For TeamKernow's benefit, I've written this in unjoined-up-writing.

Rather like we had to pay higher coinage tax to the Duchy for centuries for just being Cornish?

No I accept that to all intents and purposes Cornwall is an English county, which a small minority of its citizens would like to be a nation, abeit one which is not autonmous.
