I live in North Carolina and have just become co-owner of a sailboat, which we would like to re-name "Morveren", after the Mermaid of Zennor. I'm not, however, entirely sure how the name's pronounced--primarily, Where does the accent fall? Would someone please contribute a bit of phonetic guidance?

If we're to give the boat a Cornish name, we'd like to be able to say it properly.

Thank you.

If i remember my Kernewek lessons, i think you pronounce it "morVERen, the emphasis being on the VER which is why i typed it in higher case. Of course i could be wrong in which case i will be quickly corrected by a more fluent speaker.

I was just in the process of replying also. Just like AndyQ says, the accent being on the second syllable.

Great name for a boat, Judith. It is worth noting than in several forms of Cornish, mermaid is spelt (spelled?) morvoren.

Well, the subject line very much covers it. Thank you, Andy and Mike, for your quick responses!

So now you'll have a Cornish mermaid's namesake sailing the Pamlico Sound icon_smile
