I have read that there is a Nance Valley (or, Vale of Nance?) in Cornwall. However, my map and atlas searches do not produce it. Can anyone give me a general location? Just the nearest town that would be on a map will suffice. Thank you. Hazel

Hi Hazel,

Nance is actually 'valley' in Kenewek (Cornish language) and features a lot in Cornish place names like Penance ( top or head of the valley) and Trenance (valley settlement). It is similar to nant of the Welsh language which is their equivalent to valley. the Cornish Nance comes from the earlier Cornish nans.

Nance is also a surname in Cornwall.

There is a Nancekuke near Portreath which is near Redruth. the name is said to be based on a hamlet called Nance.

Hope this helps, but there are so many Cornish place names containing nance,

Best Regards, Mike
