Why is lemon quay called the "Piazza".

Why do we have to resort to calling a town quay or square an italian name? what connection to italy has truro got?

Especially when our councils are ment to have a pro cornish naming policy, ie:
English but pertaining to a Cornish Feature/person
Or
Cornish Language.

Why is it not:-

The Plen

or

Lemon quay for that matter?

What do u think?????

Lemon Quay works for me. We in Britain to be encouraged to embrace European culture but what cultural exchanges are happening in the reverse direction?

I hear the words Lemon Quay and think Pay and Display car park. I guess that must make me a Truro old timer.

Still called Lemon quay, just the feature in the middle is described as a piazza, presumably because some effort was made to make it a nice place to be.

It isn't called a square because it isn't one icon_biggrin

Piazza in italian means "a public square" or a plaza or a Market. So even if its a feature not the entire quay, why not a plen? or marghas?

It is an area that functions as all of the above, as I suspect the planners intended.

Can't really call it a market and I am unsure of what plen translates as exactly - is it a 'place' as in playing place?

I suppose the other reason would be to draw some tourists who already know what a piazza is?

Anything has to be better than "car park" though!!!

Plen is a town square or open place, in my understanding....

Never mind wasting time and energy campaigning for a name change!

I wish they would dig the beggar up and re-instate the Quay. Build a ring road around Truro,(much needed!) and install a swing bridge so vessels could come right up into the City again.

The biggest disgrace is that, despite all the cash spent in Truro on enhancing it for blinking SHOPPING, the whole channel and river that was once the lifeblood of the area has been allowed to silt up so badly. If they got it sorted you could have a darn Marina IN Truro and The Maritime theme could run all the way upriver from Falmouth to Cornwall's capital!!

Small thinking from Truro again.

And while there at it, knock that bloody Cathedral down, have you ever wondered why the building of cathedrals in the UK ceased for 600 years, then all of a sudden the C of E decided to build a 14k capacity cathedral in the middle of a Cornish town, that at the time, had a population of 11k.

Oh Shaz... its a prominent landmark. Leave it as a 'shore mark' for all the shipping coming upriver once its sluiced and dredged clear. Paint the towers dayglo stripes by all means. The bells will be useful in fog.........

Exactly, if the Cathedral was gone, the Marchers would just topple into the river.....

Apparently St Piran was a noted p i s s artist (not wishing to typecast Irish people, but that IS in the legends...) who was chucked in the Oggin by the Irish..thats how he ended up in Cornwall...
