More benefits for the farmer?

Gawd they get more cash gratis than any other industry.

The funny thing is I've sat in the local and heard farmers moaning about dole scroungers in one breath, and then comparing subsidies in the next.

Yes but, no but.
Do you not think the supermarkets have a part to play by paying farmers a fair price for their produce?

Only when the consumers are prepared to pay that price.

Farmers claimi to be freemarket, right-wing, bastions of the Tory, party, and are yet the biggest scroungers in the country.

Cognitive dissonace or what?

Stroppygob, I am a farmer's son and my family have toiled on the land for generations.
I find your remarks on farmers totally true - but not through their own doing necessarily. If you were offered money, I'm sure you would take it.
The smaller farmers, like my father and myself, have all left the fold as the payments are not enough to live off if you have less than 300 acres.
However, if you have 500 acres or more and a crafty accountant than there are enough payment schemes to keep you in Range Rovers for life.
My father always said he did best under a Labour government anyway.

If i understand what you are saying strop then i think i agree with you.
Maybe yes, pay farmers to reforest land or maintain it as natural meadow.
Create some new national parks.
It would benefit tourism, green and organic industries and increase biodiversity.

Nice idea, I can imagine it becoming a bit theme park like and I don't think most farmers would enjoy being patronised by London types though!

Surely if we reforest and pay farmers not to produce food we will become more dependent on imports. As a nation we should aim to be self sufficient. It takes many times it own weight in fuel to bring kiwi fruit to the UK. Can this be good for the enviroment.

We are already dependent on imports, Kernow.

QuoteUK food exports in 1994 - 12 million tonnes. UK food imports in 1994 - 20 million tonnes.

I'm sorry I don't have more up to date figures, but I'm sure someone could supply them?
