Remember John Prescott's 'see who can build a house for £60,000' plan. Well it seems that the houses built on land provided by the government are going for over £175,000

Not in Cornwall, but with the amount of affordable housing related posts I thought I'd throw it in.

QuoteBut Crest Nicholson, the builder of the first project, has admitted that the homes were never going to be sold for £60,000 and that the project had been a victim of Government 'spin'.

QuoteMr Prescott had claimed the properties on land chosen by English Partnerships - the Government's housing regeneration quango - would give people on low incomes a chance to buy their own homes.

QuoteThe former head of English Partnerships, John Calcutt, 60, was chief executive of Crest Nicholson for more than 14 years and his younger brother Paul is still an executive of the company, with the title of group land director.

Hmm..

The first house I bought cost £20k, It was brand new. My wage at the time was £108/week (unskilled Labour). It was just above the normal wage for the type of work I did at the time.

The average wage now for unskilled labour is around £300/week - 3 times what I earned back then.

As building materials are now probably either cheaper or at least the same price, relatively speaking, allowing for inflation etc. A new house similar to what I bought should now cost around £60k.

The house was a two bed detached on a new suburban estate in a reasonably nice area in the midlands.

It just shows how much more lucrative the business of providing homes really is and everything possible should be done to emphasis the point that collosal profits going to councils, developers and building companies at the expense of people's need for shelter is totally and utterly unfair.

Yes everyone has a job to do, everyone involved in the housing game needs to survive, make profit and succeed. However, the whole affair has been so grossy distorted in the favour of everyone but the home owner that it's about time there was a protest of revolutionary proportion.

It has become the norm in our society to view shelter and security through homeownership as a financial asset. How sad our world has become..
