Watergate Bay, surprise, surprise!
£7 a day though. That's outrageous especially considering it's from the Council - yet another tourist tax levied on locals. Although I imagine it will only serve to keep locals away from the beach. Possibly what they want - if you can't afford £7 to park then you won't be visiting Jamie's caf and indulging in some watersports!

What a nice friendly gesture to encourage visitors next season icon_lol and frighten them off this year. icon_evil .

icon_confused icon_confused Where in the NEWQUAY GUIDE does it say that icon_confused icon_confused

The businesses of Restormel should check to see that the charges are being levied equally in ALL Restormels car parks including St Austell, and if not, get them to explain why not.

Voters, the council should be replaced ASAP.

Even more annoying is the fact that the council do not own it, but the people...........

Proud to be Cornish !

That sucks - what a rip off.

I heard someone from truro on Radio 2 (I think) yesterday talking about how expensive public transport is in Cornwall too, so there appears to be no way around it.

Maybe local residents could get a discount with their Cornish card or whatever it is called? I vaguely remember one that gave discount on various services, so maybe it could be expanded to cover car parks?

Well if councils didn't have to fund free transport for over 60's there would be more money in the pot to improve public transport for ALL not just the over 60's. I use the bus most days and quite often I’m just about the only fare paying passenger on it! All the rest are old duffers travelling for “free”. The result CCC are cutting lots of bus route subsidies this year.

Its about time the government learnt that not all over 60’s are poor, there are plenty of young people who haven’t got much disposable income either. The money that’s being spent on this scheme should have gone to improving the overall level and cost of public transport for everyone.

"Have to" does not come into the question, the councils choose by voting on a motion to fund over 60's bus passes.

Similar schemes for over 60 year olds works elsewhere and has done for some time, but those councils have not chosen to "rip off" parkers in their rural car parks, to the tune of £7.00 a day.

Its down right disgusting.

Just been searching for that card and I could only find the railcard, which isn't as good anymore, but could a Cornish travelcard not be promoted to give residents a break from the tourist prices?

You could have bus, train and parking concessions to help offset the wages gap.

I have no idea how you'd go about doing that, but I'll have a sniff around.

Incidentally, I also found out the euchre is a Cornish game - I had no idea!

Not quite true, councils are now obliged by the government to give "free" travel to over 60's, trouble is the government don’t give the councils enough money to cover the cost of the “free” trips, which due to the rural nature of Cornwall cost more. Most “free” schemes have traditionally been in urban areas.

And that's why I don't surf Watergate nowadays.

Ultimately though, the car park is a business like any other and if a 'free market' dictates people are willing to pay £7 then the best of luck to the council and the people willing to pay that (take a look at what youget charged in London).

As for me I'll choose to surf elsewhere - just as good breaks nearby with free parking if you know where to look.

The cost of beach access at Watergate is 24k per year...Some of the business have had there yearly rent go up by 10k...

You can get a season car park ticket which allows parking in all Restomeral carparks, they used to cost about £70 from April to October, but that was a couple of years ago.

I prefer to walk there myself icon_biggrin

80% of the wealth in the UK is owned by the over 50s. The baby boomers are the luckiest generation the UK will ever see. Unfortunately they have not seen it this way and life will be a lot, lot harder for the generations that follow. There will be no jobs for life, no early retirement, no public sector pensions, no affordable housing and meanwhile wages will be going down to meet the developing world somewhere in the middle. But that's another story.

As for car parks, parking and councils - something else I have a problem with is the double yellow lines in St Ives. Why do perfectly wide, residential cul-de-sacs have double yellow lines. There are streets half as wide in central Penzance that have parking. Is it something to do with the council making money out of car parks and nimby B&B owners complaining?

I think it all depends where the car park is... I used to have to visit cities up in England sometimes, and £7 for a day's parking was about par for the course if you wanted to be right in the centre.

If the car park is in an area mainly used by well off tourists and visitors, then I think thats great.... They'll pay and think nothing of it.

Locals usually know, or can find out about cheap or free parking nearby anyway!

Graham.

Trouble is with Watergate the only paking is in the carparks, one used to be run by someone we know and he always used to let locals park there, due to the changes, the council now own that one. The laybye at the top of the hill is always busy even in the winter...
