last visit: 04.07.08 		Went to a climate change conference at the weekend, and one of the sessions was about renewable energy. One of the presentations was from someone working on solar energy or more specifically, concentrated solar power. This is using mirrors to magnify the energy from the sun to power traditional steam generators to make electricity. At the bottom line is the figure that says that each square kilometer of hot desert receives solar energy equivalent to 1.5 million barrels of oil.

It seems that an area the size of Britain in, say, the North African desert (or 5% of said dessert) could provide enough electricity for the rest of the world! Neither is such technology pie in the sky, but is used in Spain, Portugal and California (since 1985).

The cost of collecting solar thermal energy equivalent to one barrel of oil is 50 US dollars (or £25) although in time as the technology is used more it could come down to less than half of that.

Further, the highly efficient HVDC transmission lines could effectively transmit such energy from - ie - North Africa even to such far flung places as Britain.

But do we realy want to provide the middle East with another reason for the alledged interference in there existance. Hasn't Oil caused enough problems for them?

Unfortunately I think the World is going to go nuclear. Russia have already commenced a massive building program - and they have such a good track record!

last visit: 04.07.08 		I think that using North Africa (not the Middle East) was only an example of what could be done. And this sounds like a great way of avoiding the nuclear nightmare.
