Trying
by Laghyades

The blackest of nights and violent seas, and a ship that's come to grief,
On a lee shore helplessly driven, now her back's broke on the reef ;
Look to your training and squelch your nerves and shut your feelings out,
Eighty-nine souls and two small boats . . . . . and a choice that waits without.

So remember the motto of lifeboatmen of Kernow in days long gone by:
You can't save them all from the shipwreck but, Lord, how you go out and try !

* * * * * * * *

Desperate scribes, recording unstintingly, sweating their own hearts' blood,
Before the light of the Cornish tongue went out 'neath the English flood ;
An Englishman's tongue is not long enough to speak our Cornish Yeth ;
Speaking Kernewek, if but one word, proves both your genes and faith.

So remember the motto of linguists of Kernow in days long gone by:
You can't save it all from oblivion but, Lord, how you go out and try !

* * * * * * * *

Moderates seeking the middle path, frustrated yet trying to save
The rash and the hotheads, yet shared they the Double Decimation grave ;
"Think ye that noose there is strong enough ? Think ye the scaffold will do ?
In that case, get yourself up it, for such was constructed for you."

So remember the motto of moderates of Kernow in days long gone by:
You can't save them all from hotheadedness but, Lord, how you go out and try !

* * * * * * * *

The airwaves so quick to denounce us, or simply treat us with ignore ;
Everlastingly cynical Government that makes of Blind Justice a whore ;
The Census that tells Cornish children they're not real for they've no box to check ;
Prime Ministers who are still dealing the cards from the base of the deck.

Let's make it the motto of Cornish folk in the face of suppression and lies :
We can't always win against bastardry but, Lord, how we'll go out and try !

"Geez you make Cornwall sound like Iraq."

Oh goody. Does that mean all princes of the House of Windsor are forbidden to come here now ?
