With a General Election looming, there will be all kinds of promises to the people of Cornwall from London-based political parties. Voters, when choosing who to support, should remember their dismal record in Cornwall and the poor deal that the people of Cornwall get from central government, Labour or Tory. This year, independent Eurostat figures published show that Cornwall is now the only region within the UK that qualifies as being among the poorest in Europe. Not only is Cornwall poor in Europe, competing at the bottom of the wealth table with former communist bloc regions, but nowhere else in the UK is as poor as Cornwall. London is the wealthiest region in Europe, over three times wealthier than Cornwall.

Cornwall fares badly on other economic indicators - some of the lowest UK wages, one in four Cornish children brought up in poverty, largest affordability gap in the housing market, highest water rates (nearly twice as much as Tony Blair pays), and a weak transport infrastructure failing to provide for the community.

Add to this the high council taxes, the relative lack of central government investment in Cornish children, policing and other community services, it is no wonder that so many people in Cornwall are struggling financially. Meanwhile, London is thriving economically. Every year Cornish taxpayers contribute hundreds of millions of pounds to the London exchequer. Yet how much of that money actually comes back to the people of Cornwall?

Lack of investment in Cornwall to solve its economic problems has been going on for decades. Both Tory and Labour governments have not made any substantial change which would deliver economic justice for the people of Cornwall. None of the political parties has any clear strategy about how to turn Cornwall around.

The bottom line is that central government whether Labour or Tory cannot deliver what is needed in Cornwall. Only the people of Cornwall can decide the best priorities for future spending. This year, if voters want to see "Justice for Cornwall", there is really only one party to support.

In Wales, Scotland and Ireland, assemblies are beginning to deliver real prosperity. An assembly for Cornwall would make the actual economic changes that are needed by Cornwall. The only political party 100 per cent committed to an assembly are Mebyon Kernow, the Party for Cornwall

I hear what you are saying but .... I was walking down Camborne high street yesterday when I noticed a bloke walking towards me. He had a smile on his face and my first impression was he looked like a happy scruffy loony and reminded me of the lead singer of Mud. As he got closer I noticed he was wearing a small black and white badge/rosette, so I assumed he was MK. That evening when I got home, I found a flyer through my door saying VOTE Stuart Cullimore. That was the bloke I saw. What a scruff! I know you shouldn't judge people by the way they look. I myself am short fat and ugly - recently told by my 7 yr old niece that I look like a bloke ... but they do say to dress for the job you want, not the job you already have. Someone ought to tidy him up a bit. I wouldn't vote for him. He looked like a member of the Loony Party.

Anyone who knows Stuart knows how hard-working he is and what an asset to Camborne he would be if elected as a County Councillor.

Speak to Stuart and make up your mind, hundreds of people support him around Camborne so don't judge a book by its cover!

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but it's not a perfect world. It is all about marketing. He is trying to sell his services, he needs to dress for the job. I have been for interviews, never removing my eyering, nose ring or 9 pairs of earrings. Did I get the job? No. Then when I dressed up, removed most of my jewellery, put some slap on - voila, I got the job. Been there 3 years now. Have put all my jewellery back on and go to work with no make up but initially I had to become what they wanted me to be, to get the job.

Normally, the Deputy Mayor of a Town Council is promoted to Mayor at the end of his term. Cllr Cullimore was Deputy Mayor but Lib Dems & Lab ganged together to overturn protocol and put in a LD Mayor and Lab Deputy. Lib Dems are trying to shift goal posts in Kerrier District Council (with some independents) to prevent MK getting fair representation. They will do anything to try and maintain their POWER. Cornish electors cannot trust anyone but MK to be fair to Cornwall and its people.

You ASSSUME that is the reason, just as I ASSUME it is because he is a scruff.

If I wanted to do something for my people and found that my appearance was holding me back, I would tidy myself up. It's a bit like being a parent. You would do anything for your kids.

I'm a bit in the middle on this (as a MK member) - I know Stuart is a good hardworking councillor and as he belongs to a party that's trying to break the mold of politics within Cornwall, the party itself and me as a member should support individuality, different values etc, etc. However, even though I generally walk around outside of work wearing quite scruffy casual wear I know that I need to make an effort at work and outside of work when the occasion warrants it. In particular being a member of a group with aims that are hard for people used to thinking "conservatively" to get their head around, it's best not to give then an excuse to switch off even before you've started putting your message across. It's all about being realistic about human behaviour and I know that being pig headed about that just makes life harder than necessary. But Stuart go with your own conscience if you are reading these comments!!

Well, judging by the poll at http://www.cornwall24.co.uk/NS-Polls-results-59.htm it's already in the bag for MK regardless of appearance!!!

Aaaah but that depends on how you look at it ... I can't quote you because I can't remember where you said it but you said something along the lines of <most of the people on this board are Cornish>. So for MK to only get 34.38% of the votes, closely followed by Lib Dems with 29.51% of the votes .. I wouldn't say MK has it in the bag at all! On this site I would have expected them to have had a much higher percentage. icon_smile

This is how the press has approached it. Scruff or not - Stuart gets my vote for standing up for ordinary people and not playing the political games of the Lib. Dems and Labour (who are only self interested - they are no friends of the people of Cornwall).

I've a strong suspicion that if Mr Cullimore chose to dress as a woman (for example), his fellow councillors wouldn't dare cite his clothing as a reason for removing him.
