Partnership for Diversity (PfD 2007), EBLUL’s flagship conference, will this year explore issues in minority language broadcasting. The conference (26th-29th September) will gather a host of experts in the field, both broadcasters and academics, to the spectacular Alpine setting of Vigo di Fassa, Trentino, north Italy, set in the heart of the Ladin-speaking region.

In a press release EBLUL state that: “In the last decades some considerable barriers to the widespread access of RML and smaller state language communities to broadcast media have been removed. The change from analogue to digital and the opportunities to broadcast via the web have each brought new possibilities.

“Access to media is a key marker for a language community; it sits alongside educational opportunity in assisting self- esteem in our young people, and indeed is of key importance in the maintenance of self esteem among the young, many of whom in RML communities will not have had access to the full panoply of education in their own languages.”

The conference is timely - Eurolang readers will know that problems in the domain of broadcasting for regional or minority languages (RMLs) continue and despite some successes in this field and new opportunities, such as digital TV enabling greater RML access to TV, there are still a host of problems, continuing restrictions, and cross-border issues.
