It's a 19th century name for a rock formation that looks roughly like a human head. Land's End also has "Doctor Johnson's Head" below the hotel. "Dr Syntax's Head" stands on Peal Point and is, I think, named after a fictional character, perhaps one created from satire. I'm going to have to look up who he might have been a satire of. Perhaps Johnson himself.

I have a postcard of Dr Syntax's head at Land's End but don't know how to insert it here if I were to scan it. I can see it resembles the depicted head of Nosdan's Dr Syntax.
