This does the Duchy of Cornwall's distinct and separate history and status no favours at all - being a Celtic Nation which, like Wales and Scotland, is NEXT to England.
Julia would benefit from a refresher course on matters Cornish and get her language in line with the findings of the parliamentary Kilbrandon Report.
Julia needs to amend her language to dispense with the word 'county' prior to making her parliamentary submission and to insist that 'Facebook' include Cornwall as a distinct countRy of the UK with the same 'Facebook' regional status as Wales,Scotland and England.'
Perhaps her little boat needs further helpful steerage:
Julia Goldsworthy (Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Department for Communities and Local Government; Falmouth & Camborne, Liberal Democrat)
It is my pleasure to present a petition on behalf of many thousands of people living in Cornwall who would like the county to be recognised as a network region on Facebook. Despite the fact that Cornwall has a population of 500,000, the nearest geographical area represented on Facebook is the city of Plymouth in Devon. Some 14,500 people are members of the group and hundreds have added their names to the petition that they would like presented before Parliament. There are many respects in which people feel that Cornwall's unique needs and identity are subsumed in wider zones. I agree with my constituents that more needs to be done, by Facebook as well as the Government, to ensure that Cornwall's voice is properly heard.
The petition states: The Petition of residents of Cornwall, Declares that Cornwall should have its own Network Region on Facebook. Cornwall possesses one of the world's oldest natural borders, its own language and flag, and a population of 500,000 people. We therefore believe that the owners of Facebook should now recognise this by introducing the Cornwall Network region.
The Petitioner therefore requests that the House of Commons urges the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to put pressure on the owners of Facebook to grant Cornwall network region status.
I was thinking the same thing moonshine. This just seems like a populist move to me to try and get the young internet vote.
If Julia had opposed the unitary authority in parliament and instead called for census option, assembly, duchy investigation, kernow domain name etc etc then we would have a proper job MP.
I've spoken to a lot of people about Julia's little facebook stunt. They're not impressed. She just comes across as jumping on a bandwagon, but missing by yards and ending up in a ditch.
Most young people in Cornwall see it as a region, not a county, and definitely not a county of England.
No doubt JG is towing the Whalley lib-autocratic line of ensuring Cornwall is recognised as a slightly self important county. If she thinks young people are that stupid then she's more thick than previously thought.
Blabbing on about facebook in the houses of parliament is nothing more than a cynical attempt to show like she's somehow part of the youth. Sorry JG but grow up and do some proper parliamentary work for Cornwall, you left your private girls school over ten years ago so stop waving your hockey sticks and get a grip.
From my experience of young Cornish people 15-25 I would say a good slice of them see Cornwall as a region whereas the others are usually willing to listen to honest argument and facts.

No I havent. But seeing as only about 7 actually stand up for Cornwall - and the rest of the school beats the hell out of us - I could say its around that figure.
From my experience - thats not true.
They are usually ignorant, brainwashed and closed minded people that, unless you open their mind to something first THEN implant the information, they won't listen, and will probably say something along the lines of
" You Cornish Bas-tard, Cornwall is a COUNTY of ENGLAND, thats why we have a COUNTY COUNCIL and SH-IT"
For example of opening minds, a friend of mine got intrested in 9/11 conspiracy theories. I guided him through some subjects, and he agreed that the Governments were corrupt, a load of liars and stuff, then I told him about Cornwall -and how all those attributes apply.
Unfortunatly, it didnt convert him, but thats my example
I would say that there is bound to be a larger, quieter, group of your school mates who agree with you.
Besides, school children bully each other. Any difference, any part of you that draws attention to yourself, no matter how small, will be exploited. I was a vegetarian in school and I was bullied for that. A few bullies stay the same through adulthood but most people grow up.
... that don't agree with you. Please don't be so arrogant as to label other people "brainwashed".
they won't listen, and will probably say something along the lines of
Give them 5 years to mature, to go to college and uni and then approach them again.
Here we go,
"Converting" people is not the way to persuade people, we are not a religion.

I'm almost finished building a Cornish Facebook/event website for someone. Will let you know when it is done. It would be nice to see it capitalise on the fact Facebook won't recognise Cornwall
Looking at this again - I guess Cornwall is included with Plymouth as it uses areas of population and as Cornwall and Plymouth equate about 1 million, (500K each) that is the reason why.
