QuoteWe waste a huge amount of food in the UK, but at Christmas it rises by a staggering 80 per cent, according to new research from WRAP. This adds up to 230,000 tonnes of festive food; millions of turkeys, mince pies and Christmas puddings -- the turkey and Christmas puddings we can understand, but how can a mince pie survive the holidays without being eaten?

On the 2nd January the annual period of mass hysteria will be over for another year. I say mass hysteria because people tend to go around saying I'm not going to buy as much food, as many presents, as many cards etc as last year and then go out and do what seems the exact opposite, they buy as much as last year, buy more or spend and buy more than they really need to, just because it's Christmas.

I know that most of the houses in my street had 2 to 4 times more sacks of rubbish put out than is usual for the rubbish collection. Some gateways were also piled high with cardboard boxes. If all these sacks had been emptied out who knows what percentage of the content would have been wasted food. No doubt enough to feed the population of some 'third world' countries for a considerable period of time.

This is got nothing to do with 'bah humbug', but more to do with how easily human beings are swept up in the annual mass psychosis called Christmas (come on it's got nothing to do with celebrating the birth of some guy called Jesus who would have had apoplexy in seeing such self indulgence by those who already in world terms, have an excess of the basic needs of life while others die from having too little).

I know what you're thinking...... Christmas would be okay if people didn't bring religion into it. Have a nice day.
