Cornwall PRIDE 2008:- To flounce down the streets of Truro
Last year there was a very successful Cornwall 'GAY' PRIDE Beach Day held at Hayle. This was however marred by Cornwall police attitudes & practises towards some gay persons, leading to the arrest and detention of one of the Gay PRIDE steering group for 16hrs. They were later released without charge and the case has been finalised No Further Action.
However, the 2007 Cornwall GAY PRIDE steering group disbanded after the event, directly out of concerns & fears of yet further Cornwall police anti-gay behaviour.
Now an entirely NEW Cornwall PRIDE group has formed in Truro, but have choosen NOT to call themselves a 'GAY' Pride event. Based at BarQdos, the lgbt bar in New Bridge Street, Truro.
(See national press item) http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-6980.html
The theme is said to be theatrical, so that should bring out some panto drag queens onto the streets of Truro, lol. However, calling it Cornwall PRIDE is already appearing to ruffle some Cornish feathers, who feel that St.Pirans Day is the proper 'Cornwall PRIDE' day.
Last years organisers of the Cornwall 'GAY' LGBT PRIDE Beach Day have no plans to organise a Beach Day this year because of continuing genuine concerns about Cornwall police homophobia & hostility towards LGBT persons.
"Cornwall police are known in the gay community to have behaved with prejudice & hostility towards some gay persons in recent years. This has made us reconsider whether gay people are actually safe in Cornwall" said a former member of the 2007 Gay PRIDE steering group.
