Many thanks! That sent me on an interesting quest. It seems from this site that the Cornish estates were not granted to Robert until 1072 after Brian decided to return home!! However, as you say, it is unlikely that we shall ever know the dynamics!

Subsequent events, however, seem to point to a favourable accommodation of Cornwall - for whatever reason - and history is as much about what is not written as that which is.
