QuoteThe aim is to combine the insights of differing disciplinary perspectives, including regional history, migration studies, social and cultural history, historical geography, economics and sociology, providing bridges between bodies of work that too often remain separate. Cornwall, situated in the extreme south west of the British Isles, provides a manageable unit of study for this Programme. It is of particular interest because of its early industrialisation and de-industrialisation, its status as one of Europe’s principal nineteenth century migration regions and its location as a transverse space. For Cornwall looked and looks both inwards – to the heart of the European and British polity – and outwards – via global connections forged during its historical experience and via the north-south links of the Atlantic Arc, reflecting Cornwall’s central maritime position. Cornwall has also been a hybrid region, a place where overlapping identities both cohabit and compete. It has also been imagined as both central and peripheral, depending on the perspective adopted. Such contrasts provide a rich insight into issues of community and identity.
