A growing number of Independent Cornwall County Councillors are demanding the retention of the traditional, much cherished and internationally recognised Cornish logo
A number of Independent Cornwall Councillors are supporting public calls by stepping up the pressure on the ruling Lib Dem group and launching a petition today to ditch, the Liberal Democrat’s initiative to introduce an unpopular and inferior logo for the new Cornwall Unitary Authority. The group of Independent Councillors hope common sense will finally prevail and that the much loved County emblem is retained, not just for ceremonial use, but as the main logo which will provide a clear identity to the new authority. Councillors who have initially supported the petition are Colin Brewer, Armorel Carlyon, Julian German, Graeme Hicks, Mark Kaczmarek, Pam Lyne, Tony Nettle, Howard Roberts and Andrew Walters. More Councillors are expected to lend their support to this highly emotive issue.
We urge all people who feel passionate about our traditional logo to please support this petition and to help us to gather as many signatures as possible. We want to send a clear and concise message to those in authority who continue to ignore the views and wishes of the people of Cornwall. Furthermore, we want to dispel once and for all the current rumours being conveniently trotted out by the Liberal Democrats, that the new logo has the support of the silent majority.
Julian German, County Councillor said, “we as Independent Councillors are just simply not prepared to sit idly by and allow our historic emblem to be ditched for an inferior logo which commands little public support. We feel it is crucial in a democracy that the views of the electorate are taken seriously by their elected representatives. This arrogant ‘we know better’ approach has to stop. This is, I am afraid yet another example, in a growing list where by the ruling Liberal Democrats believe they can blatantly ignore the public and plough ahead regardless”.

Where there's a Negative - there's always a Positive. You just have to find it.
It would surely be a good Idea to contact your own County Councillor and try to pressure that person if his/hers view is not shared by this protest.
I will certainly be doing that to mine...............when I find out who it is.
In fact, ALL councillors of ALL RANKS should be getting behind this.

I really am amazed at the response to the press release I posted last night. What the hell are you about here ? Talk about leavng it to the few
I thought at least there woud have been a reply(s) of some sort, but none at all ??? I mean, it is'nt like you've got to get of your ass ! Are you telling me that this is no longer massively important anymore ? Unreal, just unreal.
Furthermore, to send an email to your area Councillor is both interesting and fun to hear what they think about the logo. I emailed mine and his reply is a lark and typical of his party. I'm sure you'll enjoy reading it. First though, email your own and then we can compare notes and look at the various excuses.
Just think of it. You could really help bring the Council under real pressure here, and all that's required is for you to look up who is your area Councillor, and write:
Hi ****** - What's your position on the new Cornwall Unitary Council Logo ?
Regards - .
Copy and paste my short email if you like, and then send the bloody thing ! After all, I would'nt want any of you straining yourselves over a hot keyboard

This campaign along with the CFF, are active NOW, and the only thing worth concentrating on. They are both extremely important. Failure to respond to these issues, shows that people here are very weak willed who can only talk the talk. For me personally, they both have my upmost attention and imput at this time.
It's time to put up or shut up.

The Independent Councillors know they say what people think, and we're lucky to have these good councillors - they're principled, they take a stand, and they're very committed to Cornwall.
How sick is it going to make everyone, come a year's time, if Cornwall, with its wealth of symbolism, is represented by a few orange and yellow strands?
Like Julian German says, they're not going to sit idly by and let Cornwall's historic emblem be ditched for an inferior model.
Get hold of some petitions, send them an e-mail, copy this press release off to others.
They're getting written support which shows we agree with them, they're certainly not getting bagfuls of mail which show support for the Libdem logo.

Okay, so I said his reply was typical of his party. The first one was a real fence sitter because I was'nt giving nothing away , so in fairness why should he ?
When I checked out my Ward Councillor, I found it was Lib-Dem Tony Bunce, whom I know from when he once supported me in a planning dispute. After we'd agreed via email to talk early next week, lo and behold, he turns up at my place early Friday evening.
He was of the opinion that if you took a poll on the Logo, it would be 33% for 33% against and 33% could'nt care less. I told him that from the feedback I was getting, he could'nt be more wrong.
He informed me, that an implimentation committee had been set up to rebrand the new Council and that the decision was up to them. We both agreed that this was undemocratic and I asked him how it could be put before the full Council. He said he would let me know and I'm pleased to say I got this short email from Tony later the same evening :
I am confident that I or another LD can get this on the Council agenda, so we can vote on whether or not to retain the existing logo.
Whilst I find that excellent news, I am bleddy astonished ! to find that Independent Councillors who have started a petition, have not yet lobbied the County Councillors themselves !
Bleddy 'ell Guys ! Talk about putting the Horse before the Cart !
I'll contact as many County Councillors as I can.

After the controversy surrounding Cornwall County Council's application(and its subsequent approval) to become a Unitary Authority, insult has been added to injury by the decision of the council to remove Cornwall's coat of arms as the new authority's logo.
Even though people seem to be accepting the new authority (arguably because the County status was artificial anyway) as something that is now inevitably going to happen, the scraping of one of Cornwall's cherished cultural icons is a step too far for the Cornish people.
The Cornwall 'County' Council (CCC) coat of arms - properly referred to as a 'full achievement' - features a fisherman and tin miner flanking a shield with 15 gold Cornish bezants and a Cornish cough, was first registered with the College of Arms in the 1940's. However, the new Unitary Authority logo - a black and gold flame-like emblem and reminiscent of a Liberal Democrats design - has cost the council half a million pounds to create. Apart from the huge cost to taxpayers for the new logo, in one of the poorest places of the European Union, very few people actually like the design.
Independent Cornwall County Councillor, Julian German said:
"We... are just simply not prepared to sit idly by and allow our historic emblem to be ditched for an inferior logo which commands little public support. We feel it is crucial in a democracy that the views of the electorate are taken seriously by their elected representatives. This arrogant 'we know better' approach has to stop."
A petition has even been set up to help in the campaign to restore what has become a symbolic emblem of Cornwall that is widely cherished and internationally recognised.
The petition reads:
"We strongly feel that it is not an identifiable symbol for Cornwall. It fails to reflect Cornwall's unique heritage and distinctive culture. We urge the Joint Implementation Executive to listen to the people of Cornwall who wish to retain the current internationally recognised and respected traditional Cornish emblem."
Whether Cornwall's Council will get its own way again on this issue remains to be seen, but the clear message the electorate needs to give to the Liberal Democrat politicians in next year's first Unitary Authority elections and the following General Election, is a big thumbs down. Perhaps only then will the Liberal Democrats in Cornwall actually listen to the people, whose wishes they are supposed to be representing.

Of course, others here could contact their own ward councillor as well.

myghall, I've said here before that I won't sign e-petitions for the very reason the state this one is in now. 8 in 36 hours !
IMHO it would be better for the cause if it was taken down.

Above are the shortlisted designs for the new Cornwall Council logo. An application was made to Cornwall Council under the Freedom of Information Act to see all the proposed designs. It was reported that there were 30 such designs so either there weren't 30 or the Council has not released the other 26. They're not very good are they?
The feeble attempts at explaining what the new logo means only adds to its failure. If councillors and officers don't know what the logo stands for (or invent facts), then do they really know what the new council, or what Cornwall, stands for? This is the crux of the issue - the new logo says, and means, nothing, absolutely nothing.
