Has anyone ever researched what it would take to dig the 9 miles up that join us to england, who owns the land etc, Is it a totally impossible task or with today's tec could it be possible, how feasible would it be if all land owners gave permission, I suppose Charlie's army is in there somewhere, wouldn't surprise me if the nine miles joining us to england was owned by The Duchy...

It would be easily possible, given funding and permission. Jowan Edyvean an engineer who invented the inclined plane system, to reduce the necessity for locks on the canal system, attempted this in 1773.

He ran out of money, but proved it could be done, well over 200 years ago. If you want to start asking permission, I'll chuck in a few tenners.

You could argue that it would be beneficial for Cornish trade.

It could...uhh.. offer HM ships and Merchant boats a way through the peninsula without having to ..uhh.. brave the restless waters and rocks of Lands End and Lizard.
It would bring lots of wealth.
Lol

I would like this

Everything is impossible until it is not.

Shaz, It hasn't always been like that, here is a timely reminder: of a piece of Devon that's now Cornwall.

Until 1844, the village of Kingsand used to be in the county of Devon with Cawsand being in Cornwall - the light blue house on the left of this picture still has a cast iron sign marking the old border ...from Charles Winpenny, Cornwall Cam.

Ha! It would be easier to dig the lower, smaller distance between the Hayle River and Marazion Marshes at mounts Bay!
West Penwith would be an island, and could demand Independence from England AND Cornwall.

How jolly!
