Rugby Shorts - Nigel Botherway beams in from planet rugby
Premiership clubs’ takeover plan
England’s 12 Premiership clubs have launched an audacious bid to run their own league next season, with no promotion or relegation.
In a twin assault, Premier Rugby also wants to take over the Heineken Cup, Europe’s biggest club competition. Mark McCafferty, the chief executive of Premier Rugby, presented his plans to conquer Europe to the governing bodies of all Six Nations at the International Rugby Board headquarters in Dublin on Wednesday.
England’s top clubs also want to run the Guinness Premiership, which they would immediately ring-fence against relegation. Peter Wheeler, Leicester’s chief executive, and Nigel Wray, the owner of Saracens, met Bill Beaumont, the IRB’s representative on the RFU management board, on Thursday.
Their controversial blueprint would see Harlequins, the runaway National Division One leaders, promoted to the Premiership along with Cornish Pirates — irrespective of where they finish. Whoever comes bottom of the Premiership would escape relegation, creating a closed shop of 14 teams.
That has lit the blue touchpaper, so expect fireworks of opposition from the RFU and IRB, not to mention the Celtic nations, who will not appreciate the idea of a European Cup being run by a consortium of English clubs
The idea of no promotion and relegation in a breakaway premiership raises it's ugly head again. We never want such a thing to happen, even if the Pirates were in the premiership and what the hell is this bit about?
How the hell does that work? No, just leave things as they are and if the Premiership did split with no promotion and relegation, then i'd rather that no Kernewek team be part of it.
This bit is just pure English arrogance!
Where do these money, power mad executives get off, rugby union going professional was a bad thing!!
Have a look at the debates on TASC regarding this very subject, Andy. Some of the "the whole 'Cornish Pirates' brand is a great idea" people seem to be saying " ring-fencing is fine, as long as we're allowed in". (Note that I said some!)
Great result for the Cornish Pirates beating the Bedford Blues 26 - 21 at Kenwyn this afternoon. Great charcter shown by the team roared on by a sizeable crowd which shows that the support is still there despite the two recent defeats. Should shut up all you septics for a while!!! Good job too!
Interesting view on the Pirates temporary ground by Chris Ward writing in the "Have your say" section of Bedfords official web site. It was part of a write-up on Sunday's Pirates-Bedford game:
Despite the result 8-29 loss a great day at Kenwyn when the Cornish Pirates entertained the Harlequins. A full house (6,000) great atmosphere despite the weather. It's days like this that makes rugby the REAL game.
