Lyskerrys, maybe you can throw some light on this for me, it's been bothering me for a while.
I totally agree that "Song of the Western Men" (Trelawney) shouldn't be our anthem and I love "Bro Goth agan Tasow". :P
However, when we have won gold at the Commonwealth Games and they play our anthem how will it be distinguishable as not Cymraeg? Obviously the flag will be a big clue but are there any other nations who share an anthem in this way? :?
Trelawney is more widely recognised in Cornwall as the Cornish National Anthem. However, among the Cornish speaking community, Bro Goth is more or less accepted as the anthem. The problem in suggesting Bro Goth is THE Cornish National Anthem is that only a relatively small number of people in Cornwall are aware of it. Many will also consider it too recognisable as the Welsh National Anthem. Because a good deal of people in Cornwall are 'anglicised', they would object alot to Bro Goth.
Brittany uses the same tune too, but all three use different words. I think it probably came about when the Gorsedh was revivied and they took some aspects from the Welsh one which I'm sure includes Land of our Fathers. I'm not totally in favour of Bro Goth either as it mentions Saints and the Grail, and I'd rather have a totally non-religious song.
There's a few lost reporters that have fallen from the Cornwall and Devon Media payroll.
There will only be two reporters at The Cornishman now and they are allegedly laying off their reception staff; so not much use calling in there with a story.
Maybe the Gorsedh should run a competition this year for someone to write a new, non-religious, widely-acceptable National Anthem for Kernow, with equivalent words in both Kernewek and Sowsnek, using a recognisably Cornish tune, something which would sound good sung in a pub or around a rugby pitch or with full orchestra and organ or by a male voice choir.
A perfect opportunity for those here who have been critical of "Stranger magazine" to set up a West Cornwall newspaper, for Cornish people, as a rival to "The Cornishman" then!
