Re: The powers of the queen and Prince Charles

At about 07:52 this morning, on Radio 4's "Today" programme, there was a very interesting item about the Duchy. The Ph.D. student at Plymouth University who is researching the Duchy's powers (John Kirkhope?) spoke about an attempt under the Freedom of Information Act to get more information about th...

Re: Falmouth University

Despite living in Falmouth, I am one of those who would have preferred "University of Cornwall".
But the real problem is that this "new university" still apparently has no independence, but is controlled from England.

Re: Cultural Cleansing for the Cameras - the Olympic Spirit

I observe that the opening cermony is to present Britain as some kind of bucolic paradise. I am less worried by this than by the statement that the scene will represent "the four nations" of Britain. Ple'ma Kernow?

Re: Diamond Jubilee

Quite understandable, Marhak. I am watching the Thames pageant on the box. The vessel GLORIANA, rowed by eight pairs of oarsmen, has an interesting selection of large flags; one appears to be commercial, three (possibly four) English flags, one Scottish, one Irish, one Welsh and one Cornish: first t...

Re: Diamond Jubilee

The 60 years dates from the accession, which was in February 1952. But because the weather in February is deemed unsuitable, the celebrations are deferred until June, when the days are long and lighting-up time for bonfires is after 10 pm. I note that the forecast for tomorrow's river pageant in Lon...

Re: Cultural Cleansing for the Cameras - the Olympic Spirit

I went by train to see the Olympic torch, carrying a rolled-up Cornish national flag. On the train I was approached by an individual who claimed that he was a secret security agent. "What are you scared of?" I asked. "Attacks", he replied; "there has already been an attack at Land's End". I waited w...

Re: St Martyns Rd Looe propsed 3 month closure

This is an absolute disgrace. Not only does Countryside Destruction Unlimited have permission to concrete over fields outside Looe, now there is this crazy idea of closing a main road. Why was this not raised when planning permission was sought? All power to the protesters!

This fictional tat for tourists is absolutely unforgiveable.
Then it must be challenged.

Yet another bank holiday?

I have just heard on the radio that an MP put forward a bill to make St George's day (April 23) a bank holiday in England. He then amended his idea to make St David's day (March 1) a bank holiday in Wales. No mention was made on the radio of St Piran's day (March 5). The draft bill was then withdraw...

Re: Royal Wedding - Kernow turns her back :

There used to be intense dislike in Cornwall between Anglicans and Methodists. It had nothing to do with the Celtic ethnicity of both sides. Just religious sectarianism. More than that, surely. There was, and probably still is, a strong correlation between English, Tory and Anglican on the one side...

It has just been reported on the 1 o'clock news that Scottish police are cracking down on 50 senders of sectarian hate-mail on the Internet. What are the "local" police doing about the comments on Facebook?

Re: Maga under threat

I think the more important stat was the one that said 39% of people started learning in the 2000s, and 44% of people had been speaking Cornish for just 5 years or less at the time of the survey. That shows a positive future for the language. I wish you were right. But the statistics were similar in...

unlike France and the US which came about due to revolution.
The USA, yes; but France had been around for centuries before 1789.
