Tories to create ‘Devonwall’?
Cornish parliamentary candidate Loic Rich has criticised the Conservative Party after a senior Conservative suggested there might be a Devon and Cornwall Economic Partnership after the General Election.
Reports have stated that Conservatives plan for the South West Regional Development Agency to be broken up if they win the next election.
But a senior Tory source has been reported as stating that they expect Devon and Cornwall to go it alone – possibly with Somerset – with the creation of its own Economic Partnership to bid for funding.
Loic Rich, who will be standing as a candidate in the new seat of Truro and Falmouth for Mebyon Kernow – The Party for Cornwall said:
“Decades of reports, simple economics and actual on the ground effects demonstrate that the ‘Devonwall’ project can only be bad news for Cornwall and local public services.
“For decades, Mebyon Kernow has campaigned to keep important services local to Cornwall, such as the Fire Brigade and the NHS. We cannot afford to have people who have no idea about Cornwall, based hundreds of miles away, making yet more misinformed and damaging decisions about our hospitals and other public funding.
“The London parties do not have Cornwall’s interests at heart. Mebyon Kernow are the only party that recognize the pure and straightforward fact that local services must be delivered through accountable and representative agencies based right here in Cornwall.”
